Salisbury College
The Salisbury area has two private colleges, Catawba College, a private liberal arts college with over 40 different majors/concentrations, and Livingstone College, a private religiously founded institution. Both Salisbury Colleges provide a small teacher to student ratio and student-focused teaching approaches.

Catawba College was founded in 1851 and is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. Each year, it serves 1,350 students and boasts an 11:1 student-faculty ratio, which gives students the individualized attention they need to succeed in a college setting. Along with numerous majors and concentrations, Catawba is known for its clubs and activities. Being a liberal arts college means that Catawba College is a center for artistic development. Catawba College is probably best known for their Theatre Arts program, and they have even been recognized by the Princeton Review as being ranked fourth in the nation for best college theatre. The theatre program encompasses performance, musical theatre, directing, and technical theatre, so students become well-rounded and knowledgeable in the theatre business.

Livingstone College, while still a liberal arts college, has a much more religious focus and a holistic approach to education. Livingstone College was created originally by an AME Zion minister to train other ministers in Cabarrus County. However, after a short time, the college was forced to close. With fundraising on the part of Dr. Joseph Charles Price and Bishop JW Hood and with donations from Salisbury, the ministers were able to relocate and reopen the college. Since that time, Livingston College has been going strong and educating students in the Salisbury and surrounding areas. Along with their holistic approach to teaching, Livingstone College provides academic support in the way of their “Empowering Scholars” program, which offers mentors and guidance to help students adjust to life in the college setting and succeed as students.
